About the park
The park covers about 33,800 hectares of grazed steppe, dunes, beaches and wetlands. It was created in 1991 and was designated a Ramsar wetland site in 2005.
It is best known for the northern bald ibis. The park holds three of Morocco’s four colonies of this endangered bird, and together with a site at Tamri they support most of the world’s truly wild breeding birds of the species. Around 250 bird species have been recorded in the park, along with 30 mammal species and 35 amphibian and reptile species.
What to expect from wildlife
Wildlife cannot be promised on any single visit, because sightings depend on the season, the weather and luck. Treat any animal you see as a bonus rather than a guarantee.
